For more than 20 years we, (the VanRipers), have enjoyed the privilege of presenting at schools, libraries, conferences, and on radio and television with our message: The 3 R’s: Reading, (w)Riting & Relationships. Thousands of students, including many reluctant readers, have been encouraged to remain engaged with reading and been challenged to try their own hand at writing. During a typical presentation, students are exposed to the fundamentals of the craft as the mystique of the publishing process is also removed. Our primary goal is to inspire children to read and write. We also encourage them to set aside their electronic devices to get out and explore the great outdoors!

We provide an exciting, motivating assembly that includes a group jump rope showcase, gymnastics and dancing with a jump rope, audience participation, and discussion on healthy lifestyle choices. Students and staff alike will leave with the desire to pick up a jump rope.

Cosmic Images Across the Spectrum: Teachers of the local district's schools will be given a workshop on how to use Astronomy as an Interdisciplinary Approach to Education. Training will include the use of NASA's MicroObservatory (MO) taking images and using the image processing software so they can, in turn, teach their students to do the same, and then create thematic units that utilize the talents of students in various disciplines and using alternative assessment strategies such as rubrics and portfolios. Art students can paint or draw a particular object from MO, Math students pinpoint size & scale, distance and celestial coordinates, English students use creative writing or poetry to describe the object, History, Social Studies and Foreign Language students form a timeline of the U.S. vs. other countries in discovery, impact and understanding of what was happening at the time, such as French influence from Charles Messier, and Science students explore the physics and chemistry data of the object recorded from telescopes and spectroscopy. Information for each object from all disciplines will be compiled onto a page or "block" and submitted to be added to a "Cosmic Quilt." Color poster-sized printouts of all blocks submitted can be assembled together for the physical Cosmic Quilt and put on display as an exhibit for all to see at the school. All the contributors' names and input will be recognized at the exhibit.

The NYSCLSA Conference is the annual statewide student leadership conference organized by the New York State Council on Leadership and Student Activities (NYSCLSA). Here are the key details about the conference: Primary Goal: To develop leadership skills in high school and middle school students across New York State. Participants: A diverse group of student leaders, typically from student councils, National Honor Society (NHS), and similar organizations, along with their advisors. Activities: The conference features a variety of activities aimed at building skills and promoting civic engagement, including: Workshops: Focused on topics like communication, team building, decision-making, and critical thinking (as mentioned in your previous question). Keynote Speakers: Internationally and nationally known motivational speakers. Networking: Opportunities for students to share ideas, programs, and network with peers from around the state. Purpose: The event is designed to inspire participants to take the ideas and skills they gain back to their respective schools and communities to make a positive difference. The NYSCLSA organization is founded and governed by both students and advisors, who play an essential role in planning the annual conference and other state and local leadership activities The NYSCLSA conference’s Student Leadership Program strongly aligns with the New York State P-12 Learning Standards for the Arts by engaging students in the four artistic processes. By requiring students to create, develop, and produce public service announcements (PSAs), the program fulfills the Creating and Performing/Presenting/Producing standards, particularly in Media Arts and Theatre. Furthermore, the workshops on communication and critical thinking, along with keynote speakers on school climate and culture, address the Responding standard by teaching students to analyze and interpret artistic intent, and the Connecting standard by urging them to synthesize their work with personal experiences and societal context. Essentially, the conference uses the creation and presentation of media as a practical vehicle for developing key leadership and critical thinking skills mandated by the NYS arts curriculum.

I've been presenting at schools all over the country for more than 25 years. Each year, I develop new, interactive presentations to keep things fresh and exciting for everyone. While the structure and content are new every year, my presentations are always fun, fast-paced explanations of how I create my books. Using a grade-appropriate, interactive digital slide show, I explain the writing process from generating ideas to writing rough drafts to editing and revising. I emphasize the vital importance of all the revisions and changes that all good writers do to their work. I share rough drafts with the students and demonstrate why it's so important to keep working and reworking the writing. I also show how I create the artwork for the books and explain how the writing and illustrating processes are linked for me. Each presentation ends with a drawing demonstration and questions from the audience.
