THE WESTERN NEW YORK BOOK ARTS CENTER promotes greater understanding of printing and book-related arts through education, creation, and exhibition for a broad and diverse community. The following two school programs have been designed to follow the current NYS learning standards for performing arts. Each themed assembly also follows their respective NYS learning standard(s). "Anything is Possible!" : a magical character development assembly Focus: good mental health practices, positive self image, emotional regulation Everyone has their own unique talent! It takes a special journey to each person to find what's special about them. Jeff will share his magic and the journey that he took to find his passion. Children will learn techniques that they can use to start their journey and find their own passion. We also take a look at the feelings that come with self discovery and healthy ways to manage them. "The BIG balloon STEAM show!" : a circus variety style STEAM assembly Focus: Critical Thinking, Scientific Method & Vocabulary, Deductive Reasoning Come and explore the science behind balloons! This show combines circus style stunts with educational content that follows the NYS science learning standards. We'll explore how balloons are made along with their scientific properties. We'll also test the scientific method in a LIVE balloon experiment! For the grand finale, students will learn about elastic potential energy as Jeff climbs inside of a giant 10 foot balloon!

Theatre for Young Audiences at the Historic Cohoes Music Hall Celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Cohoes Music Hall, the 4th oldest operating music hall in the U.S., with our annual Theatre for Young Audiences productions! Hosted at this iconic venue, these lively, educational musicals bring beloved characters to life, blending classroom lessons, catchy tunes, and plenty of laughs for audiences of all ages. Introducing students to theatre arts fosters creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving while connecting classroom learning to the stage. Our shows offer students the opportunity to experience the thrill of live theatre, learn proper theatre etiquette, and engage in post-show discussions that enhance camaraderie and conversation in the classroom. Educators will also receive a curriculum-based activity packet before the performance, designed to explore the creative process and core themes of the production.

Kevin Kurtz is an award-winning nonfiction children's author (www.kevkurtz.com) of over 25 books for kids grades kindergarten to middle school about science, nature, and technology. Kevin can provide up to five 45-minute presentations during an all day school visit. He can do different presentations for each grade level. For assembly programs, Kevin can read and discuss one of his books or present highlights from more than one book. The highlights can be focused on specific science curriculum topics, on the process of writing nonfiction, or be a grade level-appropriate “greatest hits” selection from my books (You can see the list of highlight topics here: http://www.kevkurtz.com/school-visits.) The book reading and highlights presentations will also include sections on how Kevin became a children’s author, the process he uses to write nonfiction, and a Q&A session at the end. Kevin can also do writing workshops for smaller groups with a maximum of 30 students per program. Workshops are for grades 3 and up. Kevin will lead students through the process of researching, writing, and editing nonfiction and work as a group to produce informational texts. Writing workshops can be extended to a week-long residency where Kevin will lead groups of students through the steps of creating nonfiction texts in more detail.

We offer in-person and virtual Professional Development, supporting early childhood educators to thoughtfully integrate musical learning and play into their classroom setting to support literacy and language development, social-emotional skills, and fostering a positive, loving classroom environment where all children can thrive. We offer a digital, supplemental, instructional resource that provides teachers with over 300 research-based, high quality musical learning and play activities that are specifically curated for the early childhood classroom, appropriate for Morning Circle, Transitions, Large and Small Group Instruction, Nap time, and End of Day. We offer a Certification Pathway for educators interested in additional learning and support around integrating musical learning and play into their daily classroom routine.

Finger Fables, Story Theater & New York Lore -Children learn to actively listen, problem solve, explore New York, and get inspired to write. Engaged by lively theatrical storytelling, they'll play a part in fables and fairy tales from around the world. When fingers become characters and they step into stories, children actively listen and retell tales. They'll better remember plot sequencing, key details, and different characters. Topics include kindness, animals, and other cultures. Ask for Medieval Manors and Manners for older students.

The NYSCLSA Conference is the annual statewide student leadership conference organized by the New York State Council on Leadership and Student Activities (NYSCLSA). Here are the key details about the conference: Primary Goal: To develop leadership skills in high school and middle school students across New York State. Participants: A diverse group of student leaders, typically from student councils, National Honor Society (NHS), and similar organizations, along with their advisors. Activities: The conference features a variety of activities aimed at building skills and promoting civic engagement, including: Workshops: Focused on topics like communication, team building, decision-making, and critical thinking (as mentioned in your previous question). Keynote Speakers: Internationally and nationally known motivational speakers. Networking: Opportunities for students to share ideas, programs, and network with peers from around the state. Service Projects: The organization and its members typically support a statewide charity fundraiser and develop service-learning projects. Purpose: The event is designed to inspire participants to take the ideas and skills they gain back to their respective schools and communities to make a positive difference. The NYSCLSA organization is founded and governed by both students and advisors, who play an essential role in planning the annual conference and other state and local leadership activities The NYSCLSA conference’s Student Leadership Program strongly aligns with the New York State P-12 Learning Standards for the Arts by engaging students in the four artistic processes. By requiring students to create, develop, and produce public service announcements (PSAs), the program fulfills the Creating and Performing/Presenting/Producing standards, particularly in Media Arts and Theatre. Furthermore, the workshops on communication and critical thinking, along with keynote speakers on school climate and culture, address the Responding standard by teaching students to analyze and interpret artistic intent, and the Connecting standard by urging them to synthesize their work with personal experiences and societal context. Essentially, the conference uses the creation and presentation of media as a practical vehicle for developing key leadership and critical thinking skills mandated by the NYS arts curriculum.

Traveling shop class is a unique program that makes wood working accessible and safe for students grades PreK-8. Students learn about a trade that is both a career and an art form. Students get to make wood sculptures with specialized tools in a safe environment; all materials and supplies provided. With guidance and one-on-one attention, students will design and create their own unique wood sculpture to make and keep. Traveling shop class easily aligns with any visual arts curriculum addressing goals for sculpture, critical thinking and problem solving, culture and careers. Traveling shop class addresses the NYS standards for the visual arts for creating and connecting. Students will generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. They will organize and develop their ideas and work experimenting with forms, materials and artmaking approaches, balancing experimentation with safety and responsibility, while interacting in ways that enhance and empower their lives. Through artmaking students develop awareness, knowledge and experiences, and solve artistic problems. Part of the traveling shop class presentation is about environmental conservation which has cross curricular connections to science goals for habitats. 21st Century Skills such as critical thinking, creativity, social skills, communication, flexibility, problem solving, productivity, adaptability, curiosity and imagination, self-direction and perseverance are embedded as students plan and build, share, take turns, make corrections, and practice safety. Traveling shop class programming is easily adaptable for unique school-wide or individual class experiences including a modified format to be inclusive of all abilities.
